Keep healthy skin this summer, FIGHT FREE RADICALS!

Free radicals are produced from stress and natural changes in body chemistry. They cause damage to the surface of the skin as well as layers underneath which nourish new surface cells. Eating foods with antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, omega 3 fatty acids and green tea can nourish your skin as they increase blood flow to the skin ad new cells turnover faster.

Can digestive trouble be causing you skin to dry out?

Proper digestion includes effective absorption of nutrients and eliminates waste. Constipation is often a sign of dehydration and inadequate fibers in the diet. Aim to drink water throughout the day (64 ounces) warm or cold. Take natural sources of fibers such as oatmeal, apple sauce, okra, cooked and raw, fruits and vegetables and beans which tend to hold water and coat the digestive track. Many health conditions as well as medications may effect digestion. Speak with your physician or medical nutritionist regarding your concerns so they may be addressed properly.

Think twice before you crash diet

As we know, crash diets are stressful to the body and the mind. Your skin is a sensitive organ and unhealthy dieting will show in your face, your body is starving, yikes! This is stressful. You are getting insufficient calories and nutrients as well which take the limited calories you are getting away from the skin to meet other vital needs – your heart, brain, ect. If you continue to crash diet and lose weight to fast of lose too much, your fat stores underneath the skin decrease and this makes the skin thinner and less nourished. Eliminating too much fat (essential oils) from your diet as well as to little carbohydrates (rich in B vitamins) can cause breakouts and slow the turnover of new fresh cells – you are starving the skins metabolism – it starts to shut down as the rest of the body does. Remember to see a dietitian if you are trying to lose weight. Once we reduce the calories to under 1200 /day it becomes hard to meet daily vitamin and mineral requirements. A personalized program can safeguard your skin and weight goals.

Too much stress causing pale and tired skin?

Uneven tones, redness, dryness and lack of clarity can all be due to the effects of daily stress. Environmental stresses such as pollutants, your diet: refined sugars, trans fats, over cooked fats in processed foods, and emotional stress all contribute to a stressful lifestyle. Dietary antioxidants such a Vitamin C can protect your skin cells from internal and external stress. Remember to take time for yourself each day – even 30 minutes.

Your social life could be causing you more harm than good.

Q. My co-worker has incredible skin – always bright and clear. She says she can tell when I’ve had a late night out. Is my social life hurting my skin?

A. Your co-worker is on to some good sense. She knows that less sleep, more alcohol, and being exposed to smoke are all harmful to your skin. Having dull, pale and dryer skin, even redness and unevenness can be the results. Start by making sure to drink water during the night, extra if you drink alcohol as it dehydrates you and then 2 glasses more before bedtime – dehydration is the number one culprit here. Power up your water with antioxidant vitamins such as a C supplement or with a squeeze of some lime, lemon or some orange juice.

If you’ve added some greasy foods to the evening, I suggest a handful of blueberries, two mouthfuls of fresh parsley and 300mg of omega three fats to speed up morning recovery. Green tea and Probiotics can also protect your digestive system and reduce ill effects of over indulging.

Vegan Restaurants

First off, New York City has an  amazing selection of vegan restaurants. I would need to be here for a year to taste and enjoy everything and really assimilate into this veg culture.  I went to Red Bamboo the other night and what an a parm mazing meal i had. The faux chicken parmesan sub was better than any real chicken parm ive ever had. Having tried that, i stuck to my more usual affair and enjoyed an amazing tofu and bok choy over brown rice. i defiantly will be frequenting this place and know ill be trying everything on there never ending extensive all vegan menu.
At Candle Cafe, you really feel like your on the upper east side. With a short wait we were seated and immediately awed once again at the menu. More healthy options  than Red bamboo but also pure vegan, this place offers dinners a sort of chic organic dinning experience.  Very clean and healthy food. Keep this one regular too.
